Building (and breaking) habits...
"Habit is a cable; we weave a thread each day, and at last we cannot break it." - Horace Mann
I love this analogy, not only for the understanding of what is needed to build incredibly powerful habits, but also because it teaches us how to break our bad habits too.
You see, for years I tried (unsuccessfully) to break my bad habits with brute force, assuming that if I was strong enough I would be able to snap that cable and move on.
Now, though, I realise that the cable is often too strong to snap, BUT, by unravelling a single thread each day we ultimately reach a point where the cable has no more strength.
Sure, it can be a long and difficult process, but with patience and discipline our success is pretty much guaranteed…
