Yesterday, out on my long walk, looking out over the fields with the warm sun on my face, enjoying the physical exertion and the emptiness of my mind, I suddenly realised that I was experiencing both joy and flow - joy at how fortunate I am to be able to enjoy such wonderful moments, and flow for reaching that magical state where the unimportant had fallen away and I was immersed in an activity that was both challenging and effortless at the same time.
But the real lightbulb moment was that I had found them both without planning, or focus, or intention - that in fact, just doing something ‘ordinary’ had released such positive experiences.
Our daily lives are full of moments of joy and flow - the problem is that often we’re too busy looking for them to realise that they are with us all of the time….
